Advent: A Call and a Promise

  • by

Advent is a movement, not an end.
Advent is sitting with all the turmoil around us and within us.
Advent is a reminder of who we are, and who we might yet become.
Advent is both a call and a promise.
Advent is that process that helps us remember who we are, even here, even now.
Advent is that gift that shows us we are connected to each other.
Advent is that calling for us to embody the stories of hope, of wilderness, of celebration and of connection.

We continue to live in times of disruption, violence, fear, uncertainty, anxiety. People are threatened, our eco-systems are threatened, our communities are threatened. At the same time hordes of people are reaching out, feeding, tending, marching, loving, singing, standing up and pushing back.

We need the calling and the promise that is Advent. We need the calling and the promise of the stories of our faith: The prophets who proclaim a way in the wilderness, a guide on the path, a world of celebration and peace; the stories of Mary and Joseph, the Magi, the angels, the shepherd, the critters at the manger – we need it all.

These resources are here for your use, as you navigate Advent with your congregation in a world of upheaval, yet a world still full of beauty and promise. They are not in the traditional  format of “Week One – Hope, Week Two – Peace,” and so on. They are simply a collection of liturgical resources that you can sprinkle throughout your services during Advent, or even on Christmas Eve.

They come with my blessings for you and your congregation! I’d love to hear how you have used them!

The entire collection of resources is in a PDF document.
