There is so much sacred music out there – and most of it never mentions God, or would be what you’d think of to play in church (unless you’re in my home church, where on one Confirmation Sunday we played Weird Al Yankovic’s “Everything You Know Is Wrong”).
There is so much of music that is sacred, that touches the heart and soul and mind in ways that are so powerful. It paints pictures, gives voice to when we don’t have words ourselves. There is absolutely something of God in music!
This piece is simply a reflection on some of my favorite musicians.
The entire piece is here:
Etude
My favorite kind of music?
The kind that soars
whispers
electrifies.
That pulls from my soul a resounding “yes!”
That ushers in the tears
That moves my body
That echoes my heartbeat:
Ludwig’s Mass in C
YoYo’s rendition of just about anything!
Aretha’s demand for respect
Lesley’s refusal to be owned
Chopin’s tears superimposed in memory
by my mother’s gnarled fingers blurring over the keys
Brer Rabbit and Jonny 5 rising together
Coltrane. Simply Coltrane.
The play of sound and silence.
Soft smooth strands.
Repeating phrase that warms the heart.
Heart, warming the phrase. Repeating.
