Don’t you just wish God would simply say to you, “Here – this is what you’ve got to do”? Sometimes I wish for that – even though I’m not sure I really mean it. But wouldn’t it be nice to simply have someone (preferably holy and good) tell you what to do, instead of having to struggle all the time figuring out what you’re called to do and be, or where you’re supposed to be moving. Yeah, sometimes the path is pretty obvious, but those other times, the times that keep you up at nights, that keep you playing hours of computer solitaire simply to avoid making a decision…those times it would be nice for a voice from on high to say, “Choose Option B!”
Those were the feelings I was experiencing decades ago when I was struggling with my calling over a career choice. I was walking a labyrinth at the time, and God spoke to me! They really did! Honest! A voice said to me…well, you’re going to have to read the poem, which, conveniently, is here below.
Thanks, I Think
I walked the Labyrinth at a crossroads,
looking for a sharp turn –
this is it, your direction, turn here for your life.
(not even – where do I want to be? – rather where, O Holy One, would you have me be?)
And I heard distinctly: “Figure it out.”
Turns out there are not many sharp turns or right angles in a labyrinth,
just mostly a persistent curve.
I love this poem and Allyson’s use of imagery. That curve that gives your path a tender shape, but answers you have to find for yourself. I keep coming back to this. And “turn here for your life” makes me smile every time.
